One cannot deny the transformational impact the Amapiano genre has had on the definition of African sound and rhythm. Characterised by synths and wide percussive baselines with a hybrid of deep jazz and lounge music, Amapiano is a genre that calls enthusiasts to joyous and fluid body movement. Originating from South Africa, the genre has spread across the continent and beyond, from Goya Menor’s “Ameno Amapiano” Remix, Davido’s “Champion Sound” released in 2021 to Asake’s 2022 unprecedented run, Nigerian Superstars have constantly delivered multiple intercontinental and chart topping hits with the South African genre.
In a bid to further foster the inter continental relationships created by Amapiano, Spotify is hosting a group of media and influencers from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and South Africa to share and experience the cultural roots of the genre. In partnership with South African Tourism, it starts off with ‘Amapiano 101’ (a Spotify playlist) detailing the background of the genre, and giving guests a tour of its origins in townships like Mamelodi but also exploring other popular Amapiano spots in Soweto.
